The leaflet is intended to help address the problem of the potential shortage of fireclay supplies due to their dependence on opencast. We have found that there is a lack of understanding, particularly on the part of mineral planning authorities and local politicians, of the importance of fireclay and the need to avoid its sterilisation. We hope that through wide circulation of this leaflet we can improve both the quality of applications for permissions, and the outcome in terms of the ongoing availability of fireclay. Recent experience has demonstrated the benefit of close co-operation between companies and opencast operators when applications are being considered.
