Extraction and Restoration.
An Environmental Code for the Heavy Clay Industry
The aim of this code is to assist and encourage member companies in the heavy clay industry to adopt practices which will publicly demonstrate their commitment to high environmental standards. The code deals with the extraction of clay from quarries, and their subsequent restoration.

The code is in two parts: first, a statement of basic principles; secondly, more detailed objectives relating to operational activities, including checklists which can be used by those responsible for the management of the quarry to audit their own performance relative to the objectives.

The code is designed to stand alone, or to allow easy integration within a company’s environmental management system.

Guidance on Introducing an Environmental Management System for Ceramics

This guidance has been put together by a group of practising environmental managers from within the industry to:

provide a practical guide to the introduction of a basic EMS.
identify the key components of the basic system.
illustrate their application with practical examples from companies within the industry.
identify sources of further support and training.

Reducing Solid Waste Costs in the Whiteware Industry

This good practice guide provides practical advice to help companies of all sizes in the whiteware industry save money by reducing the amount of raw materials they use and the amount of solid waste they generate. The advice is aimed particularly at companies producing tableware, sanitaryware, houseware, decorative products and glazed tileware.

The guide explains how to implement a systematic approach to waste minimisation and describes numerous ways of reducing waste at source - including general measures and specific process improvements. Ideas increase the amount the waste reused and recycled and how to cut final disposal costs are also given. The guide contains a worksheet and checklists.

Managing Water Use and Benchmarking in the Brick and Heavy Clay Sectors

This good practice guide will help companies in the brick and unglazed tile sectors to save money by reducing water use and effluent levels.

The guide provides benchmark data against which companies can compare their performance. It also includes practical tips on how to reduce water use and effluent generation, which can save companies money directly in terms of water and raw materials and indirectly in respect of energy and labour.

Industry examples highlight the cost savings and benefits to companies of taking action during production to reduce water use and effluent levels.
