Health and Safety

The British Ceramic Confederation provides sector-specific health and safety support for ceramic manufacturers under the banner of the Ceramics Sector ‘Pledge’, an industry-wide commitment to engage in a process of continuous improvement in health and safety.

Through membership of the British Ceramic Confederation, our members receive the opportunity to network with others in the sector and access direct support from our HSE ceramics sector representative. We also engage with regulators on behalf of members and get clarity on policy or regulation applicable to the ceramics sector.

Health and Safety

Over the past two decades we have built up a strong network of health and safety professionals under the banner of the Ceramics Sector ‘Pledge’, an industry-wide commitment to engage in a process of continuous improvement in health and safety. The programme was set up as a direct response by the industry to the then Government’s challenge to industry as a whole to revitalise its health and safety performance.

Now in its fifth phase, ‘the Pledge’ has involved the industry working alongside the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the trade unions in a truly collaborative effort. We have worked together on issues such as Dust Management, Health Surveillance and Kiln Management and have been able to develop an industry-approach to meeting health and safety legislation.

The confederation has a Health and Safety Committee that meets on a regular basis and other topic-specific groups such as our new Mental Health Roundtable. We also organise an annual Pledge Conference and Awards event to support continuing professional development and recognise and reward excellence in health and safety initiatives across the sector.

Our Topic Resources section below contains key documents relevant to Health and Safety in the ceramic manufacturing sector. For further information contact our Safety, Health and Environment Director Lauren Darby or Policy Manager Rachel Timmins.
