Land Property & Minerals

Minerals, and clay in particular, are the basic raw material for all sectors of the ceramic manufacturing industry, therefore a secure long-term supply is essential. Furthermore, for the sectors which extract their own clay, supply is dependent on a favourable minerals planning regime – both nationally and locally.

The interaction between planning law and environmental regulation governing minerals extraction is complex and subtle and we negotiate with government and regulators to ensure legislation is proportionate to the industry’s impact.

Land Property & Minerals

At the British Ceramic Confederation, we have an active Land Property and Minerals Committee which meets regularly to discuss company and sector-wide concerns.

We work together with industry to understand developments in policy and legislation and influence these covering areas including National Planning Policy Framework, Planning Practice Guidance, Aggregates Levy and Biodiversity Net Gain.

We also work in close co-operation with other industries where appropriate in this specialist area to ensure that the industry’s interest and requirements are fully recognised in policy, legislation and guidance at every level.

The ceramics sector is a relatively small part of the total UK minerals industry, but its requirements are sector specific and differ in many ways from those of other more prominent minerals. It is therefore important that the sector differentiates itself from others and that our voice is clearly heard.

Many of our members operate quarries and for the Heavy Clay sector we also work with the industry and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) to support Clay Quarry Managers CPD.

Our Safety, Health and Environment Director Lauren Darby is Chair of the Joint Advisory Board which works together to support heavy clay quarry managers continuing professional development (CPD). We also work closely with other trade bodies such as the CBI Minerals Group and the UK Minerals Forum.
